NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that democracy in the country had been completely destroyed and that what they had done amounted to treason. He alleged that the election process had been hijacked through "vote theft" and said those responsible would not be spared.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was speaking to the media at the protest site after the Delhi Police stopped a march led by the INDIA bloc against the Election Commission. Rahul asked why Election Commission officials did not meet around 300 Opposition MPs who had marched from Parliament to the Commission's office.

“Why is the Chief Election Commissioner not meeting us? Why are we being stopped? We are representatives of the people. Why is the police threatening us?” Rahul asked. He alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had helped Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat undermine the election process and, in doing so, destroy democracy in the country.

"What has been done is treason. Whether it is the Prime Minister, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat or Gyanesh Kumar, no one will be spared," Rahul said.

He also questioned the heavy police deployment to stop the protest march. Rahul asked why the police were stopping MPs who were elected representatives of the people.

The INDIA bloc MPs had taken out the march from the Parliament complex to the Election Commission headquarters, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The police stopped the march near NITI Aayog, following which Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders sat on the road in protest. Several Opposition leaders were taken into police custody during the protest.
