PALAKKAD: CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam responded to the sexual harassment allegations against former CPM Palakkad district secretary E N Suresh Babu. He said communist parties are bound to uphold their values and that the CPM's action was part of this commitment.
He said communist parties have a clear perspective on how women, both inside and outside the party, should be treated. Binoy Viswam added that the CPM's decision to remove Suresh Babu from the post of Palakkad district secretary was taken with the understanding that the party is responsible for protecting its values.
There are hints that the CPM is planning to take strong action against Suresh Babu over the allegations. Reports say that the leadership is considering measures including his expulsion from primary party membership.
Meantime, KPCC secretary John Daniel has filed a complaint with Chief Minister V D Satheesan, demanding that a case be registered against Suresh Babu. The complaint mentioned that ensuring women's safety is the declared policy of the UDF government. It also demands that opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM state secretary M V Govindan be named as accused in the case, alleging that they concealed information about the alleged sexual assault despite being aware of it.
