MUMBAI: Star cricketer Hardik Pandya could be on his way out of Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2027 mega auction, with reports suggesting the five-time champions are considering releasing their captain after another disappointing season.
Hardik began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2015 and remained with the franchise until 2021 before joining Gujarat Titans. In his first season as captain, he guided the new franchise to the IPL title. He later returned to Mumbai Indians as skipper amid high expectations.
However, Mumbai failed to produce the desired results during the three seasons under Hardik's leadership, reportedly prompting the franchise to rethink his future ahead of the next auction.
Former India batter Aakash Chopra, meanwhile, believes Gujarat Titans are unlikely to re-sign their former captain even if Mumbai Indians release him.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said he had heard that every IPL franchise except Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad would be interested in signing Hardik.
"I've heard every team except RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad would be interested in Hardik. There are reports that Gujarat Titans are also keen, but I don't think they'll bring him back," Chopra said.
He questioned what Mumbai Indians could realistically expect in return from Gujarat.
"They could ask for Rashid Khan, but Gujarat won't agree. Even if they ask for Purple Cap winner Kagiso Rabada, Gujarat are unlikely to let him go. Shubman Gill is leading the team well, and having two established captains in the same squad could disrupt the team's balance," he added.
