KASARAGOD: At a time when carpentry is still largely seen as a male-dominated profession, 22-year-old Sneha from Bovikanam in Kasaragod is making a name for herself with her woodworking skills. Her journey began in childhood out of curiosity. She would accompany her father, a carpenter, and help him by handing over pieces of wood. Gradually, she started using the chisel and hammer herself. Instead of discouraging her, her father encouraged her to learn the craft. That was how she became skilled in carpentry.

From Class 6 onwards, Sneha was the only girl to compete in the woodworking category at school science fairs. When she reached the high school-level science fair, she was the only girl among 40 participants. She went on to win prizes at every stage.

Over the years, carpentry became more than just a hobby. Although she holds a bachelor's degree and a diploma in Cyber Security, the 22-year-old is now busy making furniture. Her father, Sasidharan, who has been working as a carpenter for the past 30 years, remains her mentor.

Precision is the key

Sneha shapes the wood using a chisel and crafts the items with precise measurements. She says that it is all a marvel of mathematics and even a tiny mistake can ruin the perfection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she impressed many by creating miniature wooden models of her school and her home. Although she took a break from woodworking while studying for her Plus Two examinations, she returned to the craft after completing her bachelor's degree and diploma in Cyber Security.

Whenever she faces a challenge, her father is always there to guide and support her. Sneha says that even if she gets a job in the field she studied, she has no plans to give up carpentry, which she considers her true passion. Her mother, Smitha, has also been a constant source of support.

"I am happy to have entered a profession where most people are men. Being a woman, I have received a lot of support."
- Sneha
