Accused Sadarul Anam, murdered Sawariya Basant

ALAPPUZHA: The re-postmortem of Malayali student Sawariya, murdered in Uzbekistan, revealed signs of brutal torture. The re-postmortem conducted at Alappuzha Medical College found that Sawariya had a fractured spine and bruises all over her body. The postmortem report also mentioned bruises from her feet to her head. The cause of death was a blow to the head.

The mortal remains, brought back to the country on Thursday, were examined in detail by a team of expert doctors. 150 pictures of the body were collected. The re-postmortem was completely videotaped. The initial postmortem was conducted at a hospital in Uzbekistan. The surgery performed on the head and the process of removing internal organs and embalming to bring it back home will complicate the task of acquiring crucial details through the re-postmortem.

The fractured skull and a portion of the brain were removed for scientific examination during the postmortem in Uzbekistan. There were several injuries on the body. Doctors at Alappuzha Medical College said that the bite mark was clearly visible.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the other day that the Crime Branch would investigate the murder. He made this announcement after visiting Sawariya's house yesterday evening and speaking to the family members. Crime Branch ADGP H Venkatesh is in charge of the investigation. Since the crime took place abroad, the police have limitations in conducting the investigation. That is why the investigation was handed over to the Crime Branch. The minister had also said that strict action would be taken to ensure that the accused receive maximum punishment.

Sawariya Basant was brutally beaten to death by her classmate Sadarul Anam, a native of Perinthalmanna, at a medical college in Uzbekistan last Saturday. He hit her on the head with a laptop, leading her to collapse and die later. Sawariya's classmates had also informed her family that the accused had constantly forced her to convert to his religion.
