Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala state government is preparing to establish a comprehensive 'Knowledge Corridor' linking the Vizhinjam International Seaport with leading higher education institutions, research centers, and universities. The project aims to transform the capital city into a prominent technology hub and services capital. The Central Government has agreed to provide 60 percent of the project's funding and has requested the state to submit a detailed proposal, which is currently being formulated by the Higher Education Department for submission.

The proposed corridor will extend geographically from Vizhinjam to Attingal, bringing a vast network of research and skill-development institutions under a unified framework. Key institutions falling within this boundary include the University of Kerala, Digital University Kerala, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), BrahMos Aerospace, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Technopark, various engineering colleges, and the Attingal Polytechnic. The state plans to implement the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, utilizing financial aid from the Central Government’s university township scheme.

This initiative closely aligns with a prior state budget announcement to set up a world-class 'Kerala Knowledge Valley' aimed at curbing the brain drain of students migrating abroad or to other Indian states for higher education. Officials anticipate that the upcoming developmental phases of the Vizhinjam Port will attract top-tier global engineering, service, technology, and industrial corporations to the region. This ecosystem is expected to open avenues for global recruitment agencies and help secure substantial international research grants.

The primary objective of the corridor is to integrate professional skill development with academic studies, ensuring students gain industry-relevant expertise before graduation. By enabling diverse institutions to collaborate virtually as a single extended campus, the project is expected to stimulate economic growth, employment, and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the amalgamation of premier space research bodies and information technology enterprises with academic universities is projected to significantly enhance the overall quality of research and learning.

Under this collaborative model, educational campuses will serve as hubs for industrial partnership and research-driven education, allowing member institutions to share vital infrastructure such as advanced laboratories, libraries, and research facilities. Curriculum and training modules will be dynamically tailored to meet global job market demands, ultimately enhancing the employability of local youth and fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem across the state.
