Rain to intensify in Kerala; yellow alert in eight districts, special caution advised

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain across Kerala over the next five days and issued yellow alerts for several districts. A yellow alert is in place in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad on Tuesday, with isolated heavy rainfall expected. Heavy rain refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

Isolated heavy rain is likely in Kerala on September 15, 16, 19, 20 and 21. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph are also likely in isolated places on September 15 and 16. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms in isolated parts of the state on September 17, 18 and 19.

Kallakkadal warning

• The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of the possibility of coastal flooding due to high waves associated with the Kallakkadal phenomenon.
• Waves reaching 0.7 to 1.1 metres are likely along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram, from Kappil to Pozhiyoor; Kollam, from Alappad to Edava; Kozhikode, from Chombala to Ramanattukara; and Kannur, from Valapattanam to New Mahe, until 11.30 pm on September 16.
• Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to remain alert due to the possibility of rough sea conditions.
• People living in vulnerable areas have been advised to move to safer locations as directed by the authorities.
• The use of small boats and fishing vessels should be avoided during this period.
• Bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as taking them out to sea when the Kallakkadal phenomenon and high waves are expected. Fishing vessels should therefore not be launched or brought ashore when the waves intensify.
• All beach-related activities, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.
• Fishing vessels such as boats and canoes should be securely moored at harbours, with adequate distance maintained between vessels to prevent collisions. Fishing equipment should also be kept secure.
• People have also been advised to avoid trips to beaches and all recreational activities in the sea.
