Holiday declared for educational institutions in eight districts, warning on Kallakkadal phenomenon

PATHANAMTHITTA: A holiday has been declared for eight districts on Friday as heavy rains continue to lash various places in the state. In addition to Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Wayanad and Kasaragod, a holiday has also been declared for educational institutions in Kannur, Ernakulam and Thrissur today.

According to the latest notification of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions including professional colleges today (August 7, Friday) in view of the safety of students despite the continued heavy rains. The holiday is applicable to Anganwadis and tuition centers. An orange alert has been issued in eight districts today and a yellow alert in six districts.

Orange alert has been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod and yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad. However, in the next three hours, heavy rain and strong winds gusting up to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod (red alert: Next three hours only), moderate rain and strong winds gusting up to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad (orange alert: Next three hours only); light/moderate rain and strong winds gusting up to 40 kmph are likely at isolated places in all other districts, the IMD has informed.

As part of the black sea phenomenon, the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyur), Kollam (from Alappad to Edava) and districts are likely to experience heavy rain and strong winds gusting up to 40 kmph till 11.30 am today (07/08/2026); The National Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Research (INCOIS) has informed that there is a possibility of sea erosion due to high waves of 1.1 to 1.5 meters in the coasts of Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty) district today (07/08/2026) till 05.30 pm. Fishermen and coastal residents should be alert as there is a possibility of sea erosion.

1. As the sea is likely to become rough, stay away from the danger areas as per the instructions of the authorities.
2. Launching small boats and yachts into the sea should be avoided during this time.
3. Landing fishing vessels in the sea during the period when there is a possibility of rough seas and high waves is just as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, launching and landing them in the sea during the period when the waves are strong should be avoided.
4. All activities including beach-based tourism should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is lifted
5. Fishing vessels (boats, yachts, etc.) should be safely moored in the harbor. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can avoid the possibility of collision. The safety of fishing equipment should be ensured.
6. Trips to the beach and recreational activities at sea should be completely avoided.
7. Be especially vigilant as there is a possibility of coastal erosion.
