Cyclonic circulation: Rain to intensify in Kerala, Orange Alert issued for five districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain across Kerala for the next five days. The weather department said a cyclonic circulation is present over south Karnataka and adjoining areas. Another cyclonic circulation lies over south Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A third cyclonic circulation is also present over the west-central Bay of Bengal at an altitude of 4.5 km.

Under the influence of these weather systems, Kerala is likely to receive light to moderate rain until August 9. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts. An orange alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasargod districts on August 5.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places on Wednesday and very heavy rainfall at isolated places on August 6 and 7. According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall means 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain within 24 hours.

The IMD said a yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall, with 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain expected within 24 hours.

• People living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides and flash floods should move to safer places if advised by the authorities.
• Those living along riverbanks and in downstream areas of dams should remain alert and relocate if directed by officials.
• Residents in disaster-prone areas should ensure that relief camps have been opened in their locality and shift to the camps during the daytime if necessary. They may contact local self-government institutions or revenue officials for assistance.
• People living in weak or poorly built houses should remain extra cautious as strong winds are also expected. Those who feel unsafe should move to secure locations after informing the authorities.
• People should also watch out for falling trees and damaged electric poles due to strong winds.
