Heavy rain continues; Kottayam and Pathanamthitta remain waterlogged, eastern floodwaters raise concern

PATHANAMTHITTA: Heavy rain continues to disrupt normal life in several parts of Kerala, with Pathanamthitta and Kottayam remaining among the worst-affected districts. Many areas are still under water as heavy rain persisted on Wednesday morning, raising fears that the flood situation could worsen. However, there is some relief as water levels in the Pamba, Achankovil and Kakki rivers have returned to normal following a decrease in rainfall in the forest catchment areas.

In Pathanamthitta, the worst-affected areas are Mallappuzhassery and Aranmula panchayats. Around 200 people are currently staying in relief camps. Floodwaters have started receding from low-lying areas in Ranni and Aranmula, with water gradually draining from residential areas into nearby paddy fields.

While the situation is improving in Kozhencherry, concerns are mounting in Thiruvalla. Flooding has intensified in Thiruvalla taluk, which includes Upper Kuttanad. Officials fear the situation could worsen if more floodwater flows in from the eastern regions. Heavy waterlogging has been reported on the Kadapra-Niranam Link Highway, and around 400 people are staying in relief camps in the area.

In Kottayam district, fresh spells of rain have worsened flooding in Illikkal and Thiruvarppu. A school compound wall collapsed in Illikkal following the heavy rain. The district administration has urged people to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall and waterlogging continue across the district.
