CHENNAI: A meeting between Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has drawn attention, with their friendly exchanges during a visit to a nearby café sparking discussion on social media. Rahul met Vijay at his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, on Saturday, October 10. The two leaders spent around an hour together before heading to a nearby café, where they interacted with members of the public. Images and videos of their meeting have since circulated widely on social media.

The visit came ahead of Rahul’s youth outreach programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj, also known as Maanavargalin Kural, scheduled to be held at Chennai’s Island Grounds later in the evening. Congress MP Manickam Tagore said more than one lakh students had registered online for the programme through a QR-code registration system.

The meeting also came amid Opposition protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the electoral process. The two leaders were reported to have discussed political issues during their meeting, although details of their private conversation have not been publicly confirmed.

Vijay welcomed Rahul Gandhi with a smile when the Congress leader arrived at his residence. After their meeting, the two visited a nearby café, where a crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of them. They also interacted with people before Rahul returned to his hotel.

The meeting assumes political significance amid a changing alliance landscape in Tamil Nadu. It followed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) victories in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections on October 9.

The Congress has aligned with the TVK-led Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance, which includes the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. The alliance has also become part of the INDIA bloc at the state level, marking a shift from the Congress’s longstanding partnership with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). With the Congress and TVK now working together, Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with Vijay comes at a significant moment for Tamil Nadu politics.
