
CARACAS: Two powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela and Japan. The quakes struck in a row in the Latin American country of Venezuela within minutes of each other. Extensive damages were registered. Buildings collapsed in Caracas and suspect many casualties.
The first earthquake was registered at a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was 13 kilometres underground west of the Caribbean coastal city of Moron, about 168 kilometres west of Caracas. The US Geological Survey said that a second earthquake of magnitude 7.5 was recorded after this. The second epicenter was 16 kilometers southwest of Moron and at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit the country in a century.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake also struck Japan. No tsunami warnings or major damages have been reported in Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicenter was at a depth of 50 kilometers in the northern region of Iwate. The strongest tremors were felt in the city of Hashikami.
