Rainfall to intensify from October 1; Yellow alert in six districts including Ernakulam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department predicted rainfall in Kerala over the next five days. Yellow alerts are in effect for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts tomorrow (01/10/2026); for Idukki district on October 2; and for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts on the 4th. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast.

'Heavy rainfall' falls in the category where rainfall received is between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department announced the likelihood of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds of 40–50 km/h in isolated areas of Kerala from tomorrow (01/10/2026) until the 2nd. Additionally, there is a possibility of rain accompanied by thunderstorms in isolated areas from the 3rd to the 4th.

Precautions to be taken during lightning:

• Move immediately into a safe building at the first sight of lightning. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
• Keep windows and doors closed during strong winds and lightning. Avoid standing near doors or windows. Stay inside the building and try to avoid touching walls or the floor as much as possible.
• Disconnect electrical appliances. Avoid being near electrical appliances during a lightning storm.
• Avoid using landline telephones during lightning storms; however, using a mobile phone is safe.
