'Hospital block at Central Jail in excellent condition'; BJP councillor R Sreelekha takes dig at Tomin Thachankary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: R Sreelekha, BJP councillor and former DGP, took a dig at former DGP Tomin Thachankary, who was sentenced to four years in prison in a disproportionate assets case. Sreelekha wrote on Facebook that the hospital block cells in the Central Jail are cleaner than the regular cells—a facility she improved during her tenure as DGP—and expressed happiness that it is now proving beneficial to someone.

The 'hospital block' at Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail is far cleaner than the regular cells. It features good bedding—a mattress and pillow—a fan, a clean toilet, facilities for solitary accommodation, a beautiful surrounding garden, and special meals. I had improved these amenities during my tenure as the DGP of the Prisons Department. It brings me happiness to know that someone is benefiting from them now," Sreelekha wrote on Facebook.

Due to health issues, Tomin Thachankary is currently staying in the hospital block. Thachankary suffers from heart-related ailments; therefore, he will be moved to a regular cell only upon medical advice. If transferred to a cell, he would have to sleep on the floor alongside other inmates. Authorities may also consider the risk of other prisoners harming him, given his background as a senior police officer.

A final decision regarding this matter will likely be taken later, after weighing both health and security concerns.
