WAYANAD: Shigella has been confirmed on one more student in Wayanad. The disease was confirmed on a student of Koliyadi School. With this, the number of students of the school infected with the disease has touched 17. 21 people are undergoing treatment for Shigella in various hospitals in Bathery presently.
The disease is transmitted through contaminated water and food. People who eat food cooked by a person infected with Shigella are also at risk of contracting the disease. Often, wells and drinking water sources in homes are not adequately protected. Sewage and waste water entering wells along with rainwater leads to the spread of pathogens.
Everyone should avoid eating food cooked in unsanitary conditions during this rainy season. Authorities should ensure through testing that clean water that has not been treated with chlorine is used for cooking in hotels, restaurants, and school cafeterias.
The infected person will start showing symptoms within a day or two. Symptoms may last for five to seven days in a healthy person. The disease may be severe in children with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms
Diarrhoea, digestive issues, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, fatigue, and bloody stools.
