NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Dr M K Ram, the accused in the suicide case of Nithin Raj, a student of Anjarakandy Dental College. His bail plea was rejected by a bench comprising of judges Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.

The court showered harsh criticisms against Dr Ram. The court asked Ram’s lawyer is this how the teachers should behave towards students. The court also asked whether they have thought about the mental state the students would experience when they were humiliated in front of their classmates.

The court termed the incident as brutal and inhumane. The court also said that teachers who do such things should understand the consequences. However, the lawyer appearing for Ram argued that there was no caste abuse and there was no evidence for it. The defense told the court that the professor had realized his mistake and learned a lesson. However, the state government informed the Supreme Court that Dr Ram has been absconding for three months.
