THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is likely to witness the arrival of the southwest monsoon tomorrow. The monsoon has currently advanced into the southwest Arabian Sea, the Kanyakumari region, the Bay of Bengal, and most parts of the Andaman Sea. In addition, two cyclonic circulations have formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the southwest Arabian Sea at an altitude of 3.1 km to 5.8 km above sea level.
The combined effect of these weather systems is causing widespread heavy rainfall across the state. Rain is expected to continue in many parts of Kerala today as well. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in nine districts- Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is likely until May 27.

The IMD has issued yellow alerts in these districts due to the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. According to the weather department, “heavy rainfall” refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in several areas.
