PALAKKAD: A wave of grief has hit wildlife enthusiasts following reports that 'Chillikomban', a beloved wild tusker from Nelliampathy, was found dead in a canal feeding the Aliyar Dam. The suspected demise of the elephant came to light after videos showing its carcass floating down the canal began circulating widely on social media platforms.

Known for his uniquely shaped tusks that resembled slender bamboo shoots, Chillikomban had garnered a massive fan base among elephant lovers across Kerala.

Despite frequently venturing into human settlements around Nelliampathy, the tusker was known for his remarkably calm demeanour. Local residents noted that he rarely caused any damage to property or harm to the community, earning him a unique affection from the villagers who are now mourning the loss.

Forest officials are expected to verify the identity of the elephant and conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
