Vijay Govt launches one gram gold ring scheme for newborns 

CHENNAI: The maternal uncle gold ring scheme (Thaai Maman Thanga Mothiram Thittam), the project of presenting gold ring to the newborns in government hospitals, will start from Monday. The inaugural function of the project announced by the Vijay Government will be held at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai this morning. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will present gold rings of one gram to 25 newborns.

Under this scheme, gold rings will be given to babies whose mothers are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu. One gram gold ring of 22 carat is being given to the babies born after June 22. 107 babies born between June 22 and September 22 will get the ring when they are discharged from the hospital. The Tamil Nadu Government had allocated Rs 755.83 crore for the project. Reports say 1.28 lakh gold rings will be presented in the first phase.
