GUWAHATI: Former Indian captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma stated that his goal is to win the title for India once again at the 2027 ODI World Cup. He also expressed a desire to experience the thrill of a World Cup victory once more. Rohit shared these thoughts during an interview with JioStar ahead of the third ODI against the West Indies.
"Winning the upcoming ODI World Cup would be a huge achievement. That is all I am saying for now; I am not thinking about things coming 'full circle' at this stage. Winning a World Cup for India is a special experience. I have had that experience twice in the T20 format," Rohit said.
Rohit recalled that he was only 20 years old when he was part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup. He also pointed out that India had to wait nearly 11 years for an ICC trophy following their 2013 Champions Trophy victory. Consequently, Rohit emphasised the immense significance of the 2024 T20 World Cup win.
"I know what it’s like to win a World Cup; that experience is still fresh in my mind. That is why I want to experience it once again. Gill is intelligent. As a captain, he possesses clarity, which is the most important quality for a leader. When a captain has clarity, the players around him also understand things clearly. That is exactly what I see in Gill; he knows clearly what is required and is moving in the right direction," Rohit said. He emphasised that a captain needs the support of teammates and the coaching staff, adding that he would support Gill in every way possible.
