Sivaprasad and Anandavalli walking the streets of Kollam

KOLLAM: Every morning, the bustling streets of Kollam witness a quiet rhythm of devotion and survival. A 67-year-old man, his arms strained by the weight of heavy bags filled with stationery, walks with a steady, confident stride. Beside him, holding his hand with a gentle but protective grip, is his 64-year-old wife. For Sivaprasad, who lives in a world of darkness, the universe is illuminated entirely by Anandavalli. For the past many years, she has not merely been his life partner; she has been his eyes, his navigator, and his constant anchor.

Their daily routine is as demanding as it is inspiring. Together, the couple traverses more than ten kilometers every single day, knocking on doors to sell stationery items. Despite the physical toll of carrying heavy loads through the city's labyrinthine lanes, there is a profound sense of contentment in their stride. They harbour no grievances against destiny, nor do they look for sympathy. Through sheer grit and an unyielding work ethic, Sivaprasad manages a daily turnover of up to ten thousand rupees, securing a modest profit of around a thousand rupees. It is a livelihood built entirely on trust; by sourcing high-quality products from wholesale dealers, he has earned a loyal clientele that looks out for him just as he provides for them.

Covenant of selflessness

The foundation of this unbreakable bond was laid in 1989, born out of circumstance and a quiet sense of duty rather than a traditional courtship. Anandavalli was then a young woman working as a tailor, frequently visiting the home of Sivaprasad’s paternal aunt to stitch clothes. Recognising the girl's innate kindness and resilience, the aunt one day posed a life-altering question: "My brother has a son who cannot see. Would you marry him?"

Anandavalli’s own life was shadowed by the hardships of a large family. She was one of seven siblings, growing up in a household burdened with the responsibility of raising five daughters. Weighing the financial struggles of her parents against an uncertain future, she made a choice defined by profound selflessness. Without ever seeing Sivaprasad, and without speaking a single word to him, she consented to the alliance. What began as an arrangement to ease her family's burdens swiftly evolved into a lifelong mission of shared companionship. Together, they built a modest, beautiful life, raising two children—their eldest son, Arun Prasad, and their daughter, Arya, who is now married.

Path of resilience

Long before he walked the streets as a vendor, Sivaprasad was a man of remarkable independence. After completing his Pre-Degree education at the Government Arts College in Thiruvananthapuram, he defied his limitations to secure a job at Travancore Plywoods Industries in 1982. In those early years, his daily commute was a testament to community support. Relatives would guide him from his home, Arun Nivas in Ambazhavayal, Panayam, to the Anchalummoodu bus stop. From there, he would board a bus to Punalur entirely on his own, where understanding colleagues would meet him at the station to walk the final kilometre to the factory.

Sivaprasad dedicated decades of his life to the company. However, when the public sector unit fell into severe financial distress, he opted for Voluntary Retirement (VRS) in 2022. Rather than retiring into passivity, his industrious spirit pushed him forward. To sustain his household, he initially ventured into selling incense sticks. As he gradually understood the local market, he expanded his inventory to general stationery, with Anandavalli stepping away from her tailoring machine to join him on the pavement beats.

As they navigate the sun-drenched, dusty roads of Kollam day after day, their interconnected silhouettes remain a poignant reminder of what it means to endure. In an era where relationships are often measured by convenience, Sivaprasad and Anandavalli find their wealth in each other's footsteps, proving that the longest, hardest journeys in life become effortless when walked hand-in-hand.
