KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has directed the police and Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) to take strict action against vehicle modifications. The court directed that a fine of Rs 5,000 be imposed for each individual when commited multiple traffic violations. The court also expressed displeasure over imposing a total fine of only Rs 5,000 on a vehicle that had arrived in Adoor for flood rescue operations.

The court examined photographs related to violations involving a Thar jeep that had arrived for flood rescue operations. The report of the transport commissioner says the jeep had six additional lights installed. A fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed for this violation and another Rs 2,000 for Pollution Under Control (PUC) related violation. The court expressed dissatisfaction that only Rs 5,000 was imposed for all six additional lights.

The court said that no vehicle should have even a single light installed beyond the permitted limit. Strict action should also be taken against vehicles fitted with excessively wide tyres. Powerful LED lights and coloured lights are not permitted, as they can pose a danger to pedestrians and other vehicles. Smoke-producing tubes that create noise and fire can increase the risk of accidents and this must be strictly controlled. The court directed the police and MVD to take stringent action against all vehicle modifications that pose a threat to road safety. The court has directed the authorities to inform about the action taken by September 7.
