THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala described the incident where a scooter rider died after being hit by a car driven by a 17-year-old in Cheranalloor as deeply tragic. He also admitted that there had been lapses on the part of the police in handling the case. The minister was responding to remarks made by Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan in the Legislative Assembly.

Chennithala said he had sought explanations from the Police Commissioner and the DGP soon after learning about the incident. He admitted that the initial action taken by the police was not appropriate. He added that more sections were included in the case after he directed the police to invoke the necessary provisions.

"It was surprising that the 17-year-old was granted bail immediately after being produced before the Juvenile Magistrate. The police will file an application seeking cancellation of the bail. A case has also been registered against the accused's father. The law and justice must be the same for everyone. There should be no distinction between the rich and the poor," he said.

The minister added that the government would take strong action in the matter.
