THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated spells of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Kerala today. Strong winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are also likely in some areas. The warning is expected to remain in place for the next four days.

A yellow alert has been issued in seven districts today: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam. Rainfall is likely to range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD has said fishing activities can continue along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts today. However, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on Thursday and Friday. Strong winds with speeds of 35-45 kmph, occasionally reaching 55 kmph, and rough weather are likely along these coasts on both days.

Safety guidelines during thunderstorms

The authorities have issued the following precautions to ensure public safety during thunderstorms and strong winds:

  • Move indoors immediately at the first sign of lightning. Staying in open areas increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
  • Keep doors and windows closed during thunderstorms and strong winds. Stay away from them and avoid touching walls or floors as far as possible.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances and avoid contact with electrical equipment during lightning.
  • Avoid using landline telephones during thunderstorms. Mobile phones can be used.
  • Do not allow children or others to play in open areas or on terraces when the sky is cloudy.
  • Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms or park vehicles beneath them.
  • Stay inside vehicles during lightning and keep your hands and feet inside. Avoid travelling on bicycles, motorcycles and tractors during thunderstorms. Take shelter in a safe building until the lightning stops.
  • Do not go to terraces or open areas to collect clothes when thunderstorms are approaching.
  • Secure objects that could be blown away or toppled by strong winds.
  • Avoid bathing or collecting water from taps during thunderstorms, as lightning-related electrical currents can travel through water pipes.
