Deep depression to intensify rain in Kerala; yellow alert in seven districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department said Kerala is likely to receive rain over the next five days as a deep depression remains over the central-western and northwestern Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, over the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast by tonight (September 23).

Under its influence, light to moderate rain is expected in Kerala from today until September 27. Isolated thunderstorms and strong winds of 30–40 kmph are also likely until September 26. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts.

Yellow alert

September 23: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod.

September 24: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

September 25: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

The yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours.
