KOCHI: Ciza Thomas, the Vice-Chancellor of Kalady University, filed an appeal in the High Court against an order that permitted suspended students to appear for examinations. The Vice-Chancellor maintains that the students who participated in the protest lack the required attendance to sit for the exams and, therefore, will not be allowed to appear for exams. Meanwhile, the students decided to proceed with a contempt of court petition and are set to begin a hunger strike starting tomorrow. The SFI also released a report from a member of the disciplinary committee, saying that there does not exist any evidence to suggest the students attacked Ciza Thomas.
16 students from Kalady University have remained under suspension for 63 days following their participation in a protest. The High Court recently issued an order directing that the website be made accessible and that the students be permitted to pay their fees and appear for examinations. However, with the website yet to be opened, the students have been unable to complete their registration. In light of this, a contempt of court petition will be filed tomorrow against the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar. Additionally, a relay hunger strike—involving three students at a time—will continue at the university. CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan also affirmed that the legal battle regarding this issue will persist.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Roji M. John said the university will decide on actions against the students, and not the government.
