THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The consumer disputes redressal commission has ordered a famous hotel in Thiruvananthapuram to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation to a family from Kasaragod for suffering bedbug bites during their stay. The order was issued by the Kasargod consumer disputes redressal commission. The verdict was on the plea filed by Vasudeva Konooray of Cheruvathur. The hotel has been directed to pay Rs 15,000 as compensation, Rs 10,000 for medical expenses, and Rs 5,000 as court expenses.

Vasudeva and his family arrived in Thiruvananthapuram to visit the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and attend a relative’s wedding on August 26, 2024. They booked a room at a hotel named ‘Roop Mahal’. They had taken a double room costing Rs 3,500. The complaint said despite being tired from the journey, Vasudeva and his family were unable to sleep that night. When they checked the bed, they found bedbugs.

The complaint said that even children were bitten by bedbugs and the matter was brought to the attention of the hotel authorities. The family then sought treatment at a private hospital the next day. After returning home, Vasudeva approached the consumer disputes redressal commission. Although the hotel authorities argued that no similar complaints had previously been received against the hotel, the commission ordered the hotel to pay compensation. The order asked the hotel to pay the compensation within a month.
