KOZHIKODE: Train services have been disrupted after the clock tower collapsed at the railway station. Services on tracks 1, 2 and 3 have been completely stopped after the incident. Trains are now plying only on the fourth track. Entry to platforms 2 and 3 has also been banned.
Kozhikode-Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express scheduled to leave Kozhikode at 1.45, will leave Kallai at 1.50. Those going on this train are allowed to take the Eranad Express from Kozhikode to Kallai. The Kozhikode-KSR Bengaluru Express will leave West Hill at 3.40. It is not clear whether more trains will be affected.
The building collapsed on the second platform of the Kozhikode railway station this morning. The clock tower adjacent to the station master's office was completely destroyed. A major disaster was averted as there were no passengers on the platform at the time of the accident.
Parts of the building, including the roof, fell above the power line on the platform. The accident occurred when the Kozhikode-Kannur passenger train, which was scheduled to depart at 2.05 pm, was stopped on the second platform. Authorities say it will take more time to remove the debris.
As part of safety measures, the authorities were planning to demolish the cracked part of the building. The accident occurred when the barricades were being erected for this purpose.
