‘Want new dam in Mullaperiyar, no change in stand’; Kerala Govt to meet Vijay

KOTTAYAM: Kerala Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph reacted to the Tamil Nadu government's announcement of increasing the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam. He said Kerala would hold discussions with the Tamil Nadu government on the issue and would also try to hold talks with the chief minister. The minister termed Tamil Nadu's announcement as ‘unfortunate’.

‘The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam is presently maintained at 142 feet as per the directions of the Supreme Court. Neither Kerala nor Tamil Nadu has the authority to change this. Kerala’s opinion is that the Supreme Court should adopt a stand acceptable to both states. Kerala's stand is for a new dam, said Mons Joseph.

Vijay government made the announcement of trying to raise the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam while presenting the first budget on Wednesday. The announcement was that the government would make efforts to raise the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam in accordance with existing agreements, tribunal awards, and judicial directives. It also said the state would protect Tamil Nadu's water rights, fully safeguard its interests in inter-state river water sharing, and expedite projects aimed at ensuring long-term water security.
