Wangchuk extends support for CJP's nationwide protest on October 2

NEW DELHI: Activist Sonam Wangchuk extended his support to the protest announced by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP announced plans for a nationwide protest on October 2. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had previously stated that the protest, which begins in Mumbai, would spread across the country.

Wangchuk remarked that ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process is one of the demands of the people of the country. Wangchuk clarified that he cannot personally participate in every agitation, but supported the CJP's initiative.

Wangchuk had previously extended his support to the CJP during a protest at Jantar Mantar against the NEET-UG question paper leak. He noted that while the organisation had limited support back then, it has now emerged as a powerful voice—one he hopes will awaken the nation.

However, Wangchuk has not clarified whether he will personally participate in the protest scheduled for October 2. He stated that his physical presence is not required at every agitation and expressed happiness that more people are stepping forward to champion these causes. He also highlighted the great significance of October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

CJP meanwhile demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner over the Supreme Court's criticism of the Election Commission's functioning. A report by a national media outlet stated that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had expressed objections concerning issues such as the addition, deletion, and reinstatement of names in the electoral rolls, as well as matters related to SIRs. It was alleged that the two had officially recorded their dissent on various decisions multiple times over the past ten months.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission denied the allegations. The Commission clarified yesterday that all decisions regarding the SIR process were taken with the unanimous approval of all three commissioners. Currently, Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Vivek Joshi are the members of the Commission.
