KOLKATA: A nurse was found dead inside a toilet at a Medical College in Kolkata. The deceased has been identified as Rupali Burman (30), a nurse in the gynaecology department. The incident occurred at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday night.

Rupali had reported for duty at around 8 pm and was assigned to the High Dependency Unit of the gynaecology department. After attending to a patient, she went to the toilet at around 10.30 pm. When she did not return for a long time, her colleagues called out to her from outside the toilet but received no response. They then alerted the police.

Police arrived at the hospital and broke open the door, finding Rupali unconscious inside. Although she was immediately taken on a trolley to the emergency department, she was soon declared dead.

Police said they are examining CCTV footage from outside the toilet to determine what happened. Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner Kunal Agarwal said suicide has not been confirmed in Rupali's death. A forensic team will examine the hospital premises, while the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Police said the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is received.
