Defence Ministry official found dead at home; family suspects foul play

NEW DELHI: A senior official of the Union Ministry of Defence was found dead at her home. Nazia Khan (30), an Assistant Section Officer and three months pregnant, was found dead at her home in Dwarka, Delhi.

Nazia's husband is Azam Ali Khan. The two got married last April. After the marriage, Nazia's family alleged that her husband, mother-in-law Sameem Nisha and father-in-law Babar Ali Khan constantly abused her, threatened to expel her, and even planned her murder.

According to family members, Azam Ali's family called at around 4 am on August 21 to inform them that Nazia had committed suicide. Nazia's father, Tawab Khan, who alleged that his daughter was killed by her in-laws, demanded legal action against Azam Ali.

Azam Ali admitted to the police about fighting with Nazia on the day of the incident and said that she soon locked the room from inside. Later, when he forced his way in, he found Nazia hanging from the window. The body was shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital for postmortem. The police, after registering a case in the incident, said that further action will be taken based on the postmortem report, the family's statement and evidence.
