‘It still remains an unhealed wound’; Vijay’s emotional post

CHENNAI: Actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay paid tributes to the victims of the Karur tragedy, which claimed 41 lives. The stampede occurred during a rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on September 27, 2025. More than 100 people were injured in the incident. Vijay termed the Karur tragedy as a wound that would never heal in a post on his X account.

‘Last year, on this very day, September 27, 2025, a tragic incident happened in my life and in the lives of everyone in Karur and Tamil Nadu. It remains a wound that will never heal. Let us offer each other comfort, support and solace in the wake of the loss of our loved ones. My heartfelt tributes to those dear ones who will live on forever in our memories,’ penned Vijay.

The tragedy occurred at Velusamipuram on the Karur–Erode National Highway. Thousands of people had gathered there to see Vijay, the president of TVK. As his arrival was delayed by several hours, a massive crowd had gathered at the venue. According to reports, the tragedy unfolded when the crowd surged towards Vijay's vehicle shortly after he arrived.

Following the incident, the Central and state governments, along with various political parties, expressed their condolences and announced financial assistance for the families of the dead. The then Chief Minister, M K Stalin, also appointed a one-member commission to investigate the incident.

The police alleged that the TVK leadership had failed to follow safety guidelines and take the necessary precautions for the rally. The police also pointed out that restrictions and traffic regulations had been violated. An FIR was registered against several party leaders, including TVK General Secretary N Anand.

The case was subsequently handed over to the CBI for investigation. Reports also indicate that the investigation resumed in June 2026.

When Vijay visited Karur after the tragedy, he said the incident had caused him immense pain and announced that TVK would build a memorial in memory of the victims.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, TVK won 108 seats. Vijay subsequently assumed office as Chief Minister with the support of alliance partners.
