WASHINGTON DC: Reports suggest that the United States and Iran have reached an understanding to extend the ceasefire between the two countries. The proposed agreement is to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, during which both sides are expected to discuss key issues and work towards a final settlement. The ceasefire is expected to come into effect after receiving approval from US President Donald Trump.
If the ceasefire comes into effect, Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States may withdraw its naval blockade against Iran.
The agreement is also expected to include the release of Iranian funds and the easing of sanctions. Analysts believe that if the broader ceasefire understanding succeeds, Iran may show flexibility on nuclear-related issues as well. Iran is also expected to clarify its approach toward countries in the region. At the same time, convincing hardliners on both sides to support the agreement remains a major challenge.
