KOCHI: The Mini Cooper car involved in the death of three on the Nedumbassery-Athani airport road was gifted to Suhail by his mother on his birthday. The tragic accident occurred when the car, driven by Suhail at high speed under the influence of intoxicants, collided with others. Following the accident, an old video showing Suhail’s mother gifting the Mini Cooper resurfaced on social media.
The vehicle was gifted to Suhail to make his commute to college easier. The youngster is an undergraduate student at Rajagiri College. In the video shared by the accused’s mother on social media, she mentioned being forced to gift the car in advance as the vehicle delivery was unavailable in December, the birthday month of Suhail. It was also mentioned that the Mini Cooper was Suhail's dream vehicle.
Meanwhile, the police registered a case of culpable homicide against Suhail, who was driving the car. The accident occurred on the Airport Road around 1:45 AM. The luxury car rammed into the rear of a scooter carrying three people. The victims—Gopika (from Palakkad), Devika (from Wayanad), and Iyas (from Sullia, Karnataka)—were students working part-time at a private firm in Thrikkakara; they died instantly in the accident.
Locals apprehended Suhail and handed him over to the police. A medical examination confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol. The Excise Minister also directed that action be taken against the bars that illegally served alcohol to Suhail.
