KOCHI: The Mini Cooper driven by the accused Suhail Sajeev was travelling at around 150 kmph at the time of the Nedumbassery accident, police said. According to investigators, the car covered a distance of half a kilometre in just 11 seconds. Suhail had earlier told the police during evidence collection that he was driving at 120 kmph.
A video recorded by Joel, a friend of Suhail who was travelling in the car, just seconds before the accident clearly shows the Mini Cooper moving at 140-150 kmph. The car's speedometer is also visible in the footage. Joel had shared the video on Snapchat, from where the police later obtained it. Apart from Suhail and Joel, Ninav and Ameen were also in the car.
Meanwhile, the police will send the Mini Cooper's Event Data Recorder (EDR) to Germany to obtain details, including the vehicle's speed at the time of the accident. Experts at BMW's headquarters will examine the EDR and share the findings with the police. The move is intended to ensure that the company's privacy policies are not violated. However, the process is expected to take some time.
The EDR examination can reveal crucial details about the vehicle in the few seconds before the accident, including its speed, whether the brakes were applied, the steering angle, whether the occupants were wearing seat belts and whether the airbags were deployed.
