THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and rain across Kerala from today until November 5. Strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are also likely, according to the weather department. However, fishing activities have been permitted along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts today.

The IMD has issued yellow alerts in several districts in view of the possibility of heavy rain. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in these areas. The IMD classifies rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours as heavy rain.

The yellow alerts are as follows:

  • 01/11/2026: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki
  • 02/11/2026: Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod
  • 03/11/2026: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod
  • 04/11/2026: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram

Cyclone Murasu

The IMD has reported the formation of Cyclone Murasu over the Bay of Bengal. It is the second cyclone to form this year. India proposed the name 'Murasu', which means 'war drum'.

According to the Meteorological Department, Murasu will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm between Nellore and Narasapuram on the south Andhra Pradesh coast from 11:30 PM on November 2 to 4:00 AM on November 3. Warnings have also been issued that it is likely to make landfall with a speed of 100–110 km/h, reaching a maximum speed of up to 120 km/h.

Although Cyclone Murasu is not expected to directly affect Kerala, thunderstorms, strong winds and rain are likely in several parts of the state over the next two to three days. Northern districts are more likely to experience these conditions. The IMD has also said that after the cyclone makes landfall and weakens, Kerala is likely to receive regular thunderstorms and northeast monsoon rain accompanied by strong winds. The department has urged people to remain cautious, warning that lightning can be dangerous. It can cause loss of life among humans and animals and damage power and communication networks. Electrical appliances connected to power lines are also at risk.
