DySP Umesh will not be reinstated, HM directs to withdraw decision

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The decision to reinstate DySP Umesh, who was suspended over allegations of sexually assaulting a woman in police custody, has been put on hold. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala directed to withdraw the decision. Soon after the decision was taken to reinstate Umesh, there were strong protests within the congress in Kozhikode. Following that, many including DCC president K Praveen Kumar met the home minister the other day and held talks. This led to the decision being revoked.

Umesh, who was then serving as the Vadakara DySP, was suspended at the end of the last year following allegations that he had sexually assaulted a woman in police custody. The home department took action, citing the misuse of his official post as a police officer. The home department's report also stated that Umesh had committed a serious offence. In her statement, the woman alleged that the DySP had sexually assaulted her multiple times after she was taken into custody. She also alleged that Umesh had accepted bribes from others detained along with her. Following these allegations, disciplinary action was initiated against him.
