NEW DELHI: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has instructed officials not to impose speeding fines on vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 120 kmph on expressways. He announced the directive while speaking at an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The minister has also proposed a 20 per cent relaxation over the 120 kmph speed limit, which would mean that vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 144 kmph on such roads would be exempt from fines. Gadkari said action should be taken only against vehicles exceeding this limit.
The speed limits on expressways such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway currently range between 100 and 120 kmph. According to Gadkari, the move is aimed at preventing motorists from receiving unnecessary traffic challans. He said some motorists were being issued speeding notices on the spot. Such notices should not be issued to vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 120 kmph, he said. With the proposed 20 per cent relaxation, the threshold for imposing fines on roads with a 120 kmph speed limit would effectively increase to 144 kmph.
