MUMBAI: A couple allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Godavari River after abandoning their three-year-old son on a bridge. The incident took place in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Dodda Sai (29) and his wife Srisha (28), natives of Velpuru, are still missing.

The couple reached the bridge with their son on a scooter around 10 pm on Thursday. The initial conclusion of the police is that after placing the child on the scooter, both of them jumped into the overflowing Godavari River. Passers-by who noticed the child crying alone on the bridge for a long time informed the police. The officials who reached the spot immediately shifted the child to a safe place. The child kept crying for his mother.

The police searched for the child's parents but were unable to locate them, leading to suspicions that they may have jumped into the river. The couple's scooter has been taken into custody while the search intensified in the Godavari River. A joint search has been launched, including expert swimmers and boat teams.

The police said that Sai, a driver and a former expatriate recently settled in his homeland. The initial investigation revealed that he was facing debt and financial difficulties. The investigation also found that the couple had tried to sell their house due to debt. However, it is yet not sure that these factors alone were behind the couple's attempt to commit suicide. A detailed investigation into the incident is underway.
