KOZHIKODE: A group of Congress workers have started criticising Vadakara MP and young leader Shafi Parambil after some reports claimed that he was supporting K C Venugopal for the Chief Minister post. The party workers are alleging that Shafi is sidelining Opposition Leader V D Satheesan and making strategic moves in favour of KC Venugopal.
After the election victory, Shafi had shared a photo with V T Sooraj while holding up a picture of the late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. However, instead of praise, the post attracted a large number of critical comments and warnings from party workers.
Many supporters warned that ordinary workers would leave the party if K C Venugopal is made Chief Minister by ignoring Satheesan, who they believe led the party to electoral success. Several comments said leaders should understand public sentiment instead of focusing on group interests and personal relationships. Some workers also warned that Shafi himself could face backlash if he is seen as betraying Satheesan. A section of supporters warned that if Satheesan is betrayed, they would work against Shafi in the future, regardless of how influential he is.
Some party workers also recalled the strong stand taken by Satheesan when legal action was initiated against Rahul Mamkootathil. They said standing with K C Venugopal now, while forgetting Satheesan’s support during that period, would amount to disloyalty. Comments also warned that the Congress could face a public backlash similar to what the CPM experienced in places like Payyannur and Taliparamba.
