NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the satirical political movement making waves on social media, reopened their social media account after facing a brief ban on Thursday. Founder Abhijit Dipke said he expected a ban since the outfit garnered much popularity, sending shock waves to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Dipke also revealed that there was an attempt to hack CJP's Instagram account. The Cockroach Party is a satirical group formed on social media against Justice Surya Kant's remark comparing unemployed Indian youths to cockroaches. CJP is presented as the voice of the unemployed.
The unemployed, lazy and those spending more than 12 hours on social media are fit enough to join the party, according to Dipke. Though it may sound funny, Cockroach Party’s popularity has left the founder and the other members in disbelief. If the current popularity and frenzy are any indication, the movement may resonate further in the Indian political milieu.
The Chief Justice's sarcastic remark was made during the Supreme Court proceedings on May 15. The CJI said that unemployed youths were cockroaches attacking the system in the guise of social media and RTI activists. The Chief Justice had to issue an explanatory note after the incident became controversial. The Cockroach Janta Party account was started as a protest against his remark. Within hours of the party's launch, millions followed the outfit, and if numbers are true, CJP is the most followed political outfit on social media, even surpassing the followers of BJP. A website has now been launched with the preface 'Voice of the Lazy and the Unemployed'.
