THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While we usually look to the skies for the relief of the monsoon, Kerala is currently under a different kind of atmospheric cover: the Heat Dome. This phenomenon is a total lifestyle shift. With the sun hitting harder and the sea breeze staying offshore, the "feels like" temperature is turning daily routines into a constant effort to stay cool.
Science of the "Lid"
A heat dome occurs when a high-pressure system stalls over the region, trapping hot air underneath it. Normally, hot air rises and escapes into the upper atmosphere, but this high pressure pushes that air back down, compressing it and making it even hotter. This dome also acts as a blockade, preventing clouds from forming and stopping the cooling sea breeze from reaching inland. This is why the air feels so stagnant and heavy across the state right now.

Adapting your daily flow
To manage these conditions, you have to outsmart the environment. Treat your home as a thermal barrier by closing all windows and pulling the curtains between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to keep the cooler morning air inside. Once the sun sets, open everything up and use a pedestal fan facing toward a window to push the stale, hot air out while pulling the night air in.
Your diet should shift toward hydration. Prioritise spiced buttermilk or salted rice water over sugary drinks to replenish lost electrolytes. It is also helpful to avoid heavy meals during the day, as they increase your metabolic heat and make you feel warmer.
Finally, shift your schedule to the cooler hours. The heat dome makes midday activity risky, so move your workouts and errands to before 7:30 AM or after 6:30 PM. If you go out, choose loose, light-colored cottons. Dark colours absorb the intense solar energy that the dome lets through, while breathable fabrics provide a natural gap for your skin to stay dry. By making these small adjustments to your rhythm, you can stay comfortable until the atmospheric pressure finally breaks and the clouds return.
