THRISSUR: A major fire broke out at the parking area of Thrissur railway station. Reports say around 600 bikes were gutted in the fire. The fire broke out in the area adjacent to the railway tracks. Rescue operations are underway under the leadership of the fire brigade. A nearby tree has also caught fire.

Smoke was seen emanating from the parking area at around 6:30 Sunday morning. It is said that the cause of the accident was fire falling from above the railway line onto the bikes covered with sheets. Initially, two bikes caught fire. Within seconds, the fire spread and the extent of the accident increased when the tank of the bike exploded.
The version of Mallika, an employee, who was on duty at the parking area when the accident happened is, ‘Fire fell from above the railway line onto the bikes. I tried to douse the flames with water, but the smoke rose and the fire flared up. By the time I called people for help, the tank of the bike had exploded. The parking lot was less crowded as it was Sunday, otherwise there would have been about a thousand vehicles.
