KANNUR: Dr. Mercy Oommen (94), a former IMA president, prominent pathologist and former State Women's Football Association president, passed away. She was the founder of Sara Blood Bank in Kannur and the wife of the late Dr. C.E. Oommen.
Mercy Oommen completed her medical studies at Vellore Christian College in 1955. She joined the Kerala Health Service in 1956. After working in Kollam and Ernakulam government hospitals, she retired from government service in 1970 and started the Sara Memorial Medical Lab in Kannur city.
Between 1977 to 1981, she served as the president of the Rotary Inner Wheel, which works for mentally challenged children. She became the president of the Indian Medical Association from 1982 to 1983. She was the president of the Kerala State Women's Football Association until 1985. Mercy Oommen established the Y.W.C.A. Women's Hostel in 2022. She has also served as a member of the Cantonment Board from 2008 to 2013. In 2002, Sara Lab was expanded into a blood bank.
Children: Dr. Raj Isaac Oommen (Ophthalmologist, Dr. Oommen Eye Clinic), Moti Oommen (Kannur Drug House). Daughter-in-law: Dr. Mary Oommen (Dr. Oommen Eye Clinic), Asha Oommen. The funeral will be held at 4 pm at CSI Cemetery after the service at Thekki Bazaar Marthoma Church on Friday.
