ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir has said that he does not want to enter politics or become the country's president. Reports say that Asim Munir said, “God has made me the protector of the country. I do not desire any position other than that.” This was stated in an article published in The Dawn newspaper. The article in the Dawn says that the Pakistani army chief made his political stance clear in Brussels, Belgium, after his visit to the United States.

“God has made me protector of the country. I do not desire any position other than that. I am a soldier, my greatest desire is martyrdom,” Asim Munir was reported to have said, as quoted by the Pakistan-based newspaper.

The talk started with politics and especially on the rumours that work is being done to change the President of Pakistan and the Prime Minister. General Asim Munir was responding to a reporter's question about whether he, as the army chief, would be able to assume any of these positions. The Dawn reporter spoke to Asim Munir, citing several incidents of military interference in the government in Pakistan, along with examples.
