HUBBALI: The frightening incident of a former classmate stabbing a girl to death for not accepting his love proposal has now snowballed into a national outrage. Congress councillor Niranjan Hiremath's daughter Neha (23), a first-year MCA student died after being attacked by her former classmate Fayaz, who hails from Belagavi, Bengaluru. According to police, Fayaz has been pestering Neha to enter into a relationship, which the latter has been denying for a long. This forced Fayaz to wait outside the campus on Thursday and deliver his last love request.

Exacerbating the issue and putting the congress government on the backfoot, Neha’s father and congress councillor Niranjan Hiremath, claimed to the media that the accused was planning to trap his daughter and termed the incident as a clear case of ‘love Jihad’.

‘’The whole nation has seen what happened to my daughter. They have been doing tricks to trap my daughter but she relented. Please take care of your daughters. Love jihad is spreading.” a bereaved Niranjan talked to the media.

At the same time, the Karnataka government dismissed the ‘love jihad’ angle and termed the gruesome incident to be a result of personnel issues. BJP and other right-wing parties are now on the streets with ferocious protests against the horrific incident that has given a headache to the Congress government right at the onset of the election season.
