Vijay’s power play: TVK set to form government as rebels shift tides
CHENNAI: In a significant political development, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has reportedly reached the magic figure of 118 seats required to form a government in Tamil Nadu. Party President Vijay is slated to meet Governor R.V. Arlekar at 6:00 PM today to formally stake his claim.
The breakthrough comes amid intense speculation that TVK has secured the backing of the VCK, CPM, and CPI. Furthermore, the party has successfully negotiated with a rebel faction of the AIADMK, orchestrated by former AIADMK heavyweight turned TVK member, Sengottaiyan. High-ranking dissenters, including C.V. Shanmugam and O.S. Manian, along with 28 loyalist MLAs, are currently sequestered at a resort in Puducherry. Sources indicate that a deal is being finalised, with the rebels demanding the Deputy Chief Minister's post for Shanmugam and two cabinet berths.
The Governor had previously turned down Vijay’s verbal claims, insisting on a formal letter of support from 118 MLAs. In a surprising turn, DMK Chief M.K. Stalin has also called on the Governor to respect the mandate and invite TVK to form the government, following a consultative meeting with his alliance partners.
