Three-tonne piece of rocket debris crashes into moon, 20 metre wide crater formed: Scientists

moon

Scientists said that a three-tonne piece of rocket debris crashed into the moon, creating a 20 metre wide crater on the moon's surface. They said that the rocket, which was hurtling through space for several years, crashed into the lunar surface on Friday.

Experts are yet to confirm from where the rocket debris originated. They are not sure if it was part of a rocket, launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in 2015, or leftovers of a Chinese launch vehicle.

Scientists believe that the impact of the crash could create a 66-foot-long crater on the moon, creating dust clouds about 100 miles away. Experts said that this was the first time that space debris was hitting the moon. It might take several months to locate the crater and confirm the impact, as the crash took place on the farthest part of the moon.
