NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill has taken charge as India’s new captain as part of a major generational change in Indian cricket. Gill currently leads India in both Test and ODI formats, replacing Rohit Sharma as captain. Now, Gill has responded to questions about the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI team.

Speaking to the media ahead of the second Test against the West Indies, Gill confirmed that both Rohit and Kohli remain part of the team management’s long-term plans.

Rohit and Kohli, who have retired from Tests and T20Is, now play only in ODIs for India. After taking a break following the 2025 IPL, both are set to return for the upcoming ODI series against Australia later this month. Gill also revealed that both players are being considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Their experience and what they’ve achieved for India are unmatched. Very few players in the world have that level of skill and knowledge. That’s why we continue to see them as an important part of the team’s future,” Gill said.

Gill also shared his thoughts on being named India’s ODI captain. He said he was informed about the decision before the official announcement and felt honoured to lead the country.

“I’m very happy to lead India in the ODI format. The last few months have been great for me, and I’m looking forward to the future. I don’t want to look back at what I’ve achieved. I just want to keep moving forward and focus on what’s ahead,” he said.

Gill also spoke about his relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is seen as the strategic mind behind India’s generational transition.

“We often talk about how to make players feel secure and how to build strong fast bowlers for the future. Those are the areas we’re really focusing on,” Gill added.
